Believe it or not King’s College, London’s researchers have discovered that just a dose of cannabis extract or Cannabidiol helps reducing brain function abnormalities in people with psychosis; which is one of the strangest findings in the last Triennium.
The first-ever proof of this strange affair was published in JAMA Psychiatry, a result from a new MRI trial of how Cannabidiols, also known as CBD; a benign compound of cannabis, affect the brain reducing the psychotic symptoms.
“The mainstay of current treatment for people with psychosis is drugs that were first discovered in the 1950s and unfortunately does not work for everyone; our results have started unraveling the brain mechanisms of a new drug that works in a completely different way to traditional antipsychotics,” said Dr. Sagnik Bhattacharyya from the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (loPPN)
A study took place by the researchers along with 33 young volunteers who were experiencing distressing psychotic symptoms but weren’t diagnosed yet, and 19 healthy young brains as well. They gave Cannabidiols to 16 of them; on the other hand, a placebo was given to the other team of 17. Later, they were studied in an MRI scanner conducting a memory test for engaging three regions of the brain which are very famous for participating in psychosis.
The candidates with psychosis’ risk were much abnormal than of the healthy candidates. As well in comparison, the ones who were given the doses of Cannabidiols had rather less severe brain activity than of them who had a placebo and clearly saying that Cannabidiols indeed can help to reset the brain.
Interestingly, King’s College earlier research insists that Cannabidiol appears to work in opposition to Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC); an ingredient found in cannabis charged with having an explicit link of developing of psychosis while Cannabidiol has broadly opposite neurological and behavioral effects.
Dr. Bhattacharyya said, “There is an urgent need for a safe treatment for young people at risk of psychosis, one of the main advantages of Cannabidiol is that it is safe and seems to be very well tolerated, making it in some ways an ideal treatment. If successful, this trial will provide definitive proof of Cannabidiol’s role as an antipsychotic treatment and pave the way for its use in the clinic.”
Researchers are now exploring whether we can really use Cannabidiols for reducing the high risk of developing in psychosis, even the US has licensed the purified Cannabidiols as the treatment for rare childhood epilepsies.
